From shared meals and evening house activities to study sessions and weekend events, every day offers opportunities to connect with others, learn new skills and make the most of school life.
Activities & Wellbeing
A varied programme of weekday and weekend activities is available throughout the year.
Activities change each term and may include sports, creative pursuits, outdoor adventures, cultural trips and social events. Pupils are encouraged to suggest new activities, ensuring the programme reflects their interests and ambitions.
Most activities are included within boarding fees, with advance notice provided for any optional activities that incur additional costs.
Support from Day One
Buddy Programme
Every new boarder is paired with a buddy of a similar age before arrival.
Buddies make contact during the summer term, helping answer questions, ease concerns and provide reassurance before pupils join the school. This support continues throughout the year, helping new pupils settle quickly into boarding life.
Induction Programme
Each house runs a comprehensive induction programme to help pupils feel at home from the start. New boarders are introduced to routines, expectations and key members of the community, while international pupils are invited to arrive early for an enhanced orientation experience.
Pastoral Care

Walters House (Sixth Form)
Named after former pupil and author Minette Walters, Walters House is home to our Sixth Form community.

Cooper House (Years 3–11)
Named after former pupil and author Jilly Cooper, Cooper House provides a warm and supportive environment for younger boarders.

International Boarders
CGS warmly welcomes pupils from around the world and takes pride in providing a supportive, inclusive boarding community where international pupils can thrive.
We understand that joining a UK boarding school is a significant step, and our Admissions Team works closely with pupils, parents and educational agents to provide clear guidance and personalised support throughout the application process.
International pupils are invited to attend an induction programme before the start of term, helping them settle into school life, meet staff and pupils, and become familiar with the boarding environment.
English Language Support
For pupils whose first language is not English, specialist EAL (English as an Additional Language) support is available. Tailored lessons help pupils develop confidence and fluency, ensuring they can fully access the curriculum and make the most of every aspect of school life.

Who can board at CGS?
Boarding is available for pupils from Year 3 through to Sixth Form. Boarders are accommodated in either Cooper House (Years 3–11) or Walters House (Sixth Form).
What happens when a new boarder joins?
All new boarders take part in an induction programme and are paired with a buddy before arrival. This helps pupils settle quickly, make friends and feel confident about boarding life from day one.
Can boarders stay at school during weekends?
Yes. A full programme of activities is available at weekends, making boarding a lively and enjoyable experience throughout the week.
How do boarders keep in touch with home?
Boarders are encouraged to maintain regular contact with their families. House staff also work closely with parents and guardians, ensuring strong communication and support throughout the year.
Is there supervised study time?
Yes. Structured study periods form part of the boarding routine and provide pupils with a quiet, supportive environment in which to complete prep and independent study.
Are activities included?
Most boarding activities are included within boarding fees. Any additional costs for trips or specialist activities are communicated in advance.
Is there support for overseas pupils?
Yes. International pupils receive additional induction support, EAL provision where required, and dedicated pastoral care to help them settle successfully.
Can boarders access their houses during the school day?
Access varies by year group. Sixth Form pupils have greater access to study and boarding spaces throughout the day, while younger pupils can access houses at designated times.
How are room allocations decided?
Room allocations are reviewed regularly by House staff. Pupils may express preferences where appropriate, although final decisions are made by Houseparents.
